WHAT IS AFFILIATE MARKETING?
Affiliate marketing is basically referring someone to a merchant and getting paid for that referral.
In most cases, you get a percentage of any sales generated. In a few situations, you can earn money just for sending someone to the merchant's site. The commission earned varies by merchant and by program.
Depending on the rules of the individual affiliate program, you can market the product (or service) on a website, message board, by newsletter, via email, blog, print media, or all of the above.
HOW TO GET STARTED IN AFFILIATE MARKETING
There are so many great products and programs available to market, it is tempting to just start joining affiliate programs and placing ads all over the place. NOT a good idea! Take your time, educate yourself, make a plan, and stay organized from the very beginning. Why not bookmark this site right now so you can find it again later?
Choose a product or a product theme that you want to market. Is there something that you are really passionate about? Something that your friends seek your advice on? That may be the place to start. OR... Is there some problem that you need resolved that you think other people might also need help with? Why not do the research and become the expert on the subject?
Study affiliate marketing. Learn as much about affiliate marketing as you can. Read about what others have done to be successful. The more you know, the more you understand how different programs work, the more money you can make.
Build a website. If you have determined your target market, found a product or two, and learned a few affiliate tips, then you are ready to put it all into action. You don't need to be an affiliate marketing expert to get started, but a website is a pretty critical component to success.
Find affiliate programs. Search the affiliate networks for merchants that sell your chosen product. Search the internet for similar products or services and look if they offer an affiliate program.
Advertise! Use every method you know of to promote your website and affiliate programs. (Well, except for spam, of course.) Article marketing, pay-per-click and message boards are only a few of the possibilities.
